Known as Savatthi in the ancient times when it was capital
of Kosala Mahajanapada, the biggest town in Gangetic plains,
Sravasti is an important Buddhist Pilgrimage. As the legen
goes, it is believed that Lord Buddha spent his 25 monsoons
seasons in Sravasti where he made the atheist king Koshal
believe in God by showing him the miracle of enlightenment
on lotus of 1000 petals. It was from Sravasti that Buddha
started on his missionary work to the different parts
of the world. You can also visit this pilgrimage on Tour

Situated in Gonda district in eastern Uttar Pradesh,
the most convenient way to reach Sravasti is via Lucknow,
the capital of Uttar Pradesh, which is well connected
by air and rail to all parts of India. Sravasti is said
to be the place where besides king Koshal the known
dacoit Angulimal was transformed to a Buddhist monk
by the Lord himself. The virtuous king Ashoka, who had
also become a great follower of Buddhism visited this
place and erected 2 pillars on either side of the Jetavana
Monastery, where Buddha used to stay.
Sravasti play host to the sacred pipal tree, a sapling
from the original Maha Bodhi tree under which the Buddha
attained nirvana. Today, Jetavana has two monasteries,
six temples and five Stupas. Sravasti is not famous
as only a Buddhist Pilgrimage centre. The place was
also under the influence of Lord Mahavira, the last
Jain Tirthankar, and the splendid Shwetambara temple
here attracts thousands of Jain pilgrims all the year
round. The Sobhnath Temple is believed to the birthplace
of the Jain Tirthankar Sambhavnath.
