Rajgir, literally meaning the house of the kings is an
important Buddhist destination in India. The place is
enveloped by meandering river Banganga and 5 hills. During
Buddha's lifetime, this place was the capital of the mighty
Magadhan Kingdom and was ruled by the honorable king Bimbisara.
Lord Buddha during his lifetime spent many years of retreat
here meditating on top of Griddhkuta, the 'Hill of the
Vultures'.
Surrounded by the rocky hills, what now remains now
of once great city is a small village relinquishing
in the remains of its celebrated and historical past.
The cyclopean wall that encircles the town, the marks
engraved in rocks that according to the local people
are of Lord Krishna's Chariot, all have a tale to tell
about their glorious past. Lord Mahavir had also spent
14 years of his life at Rajgir and Nalanda.
An aerial ropeway view provides the link with a hilltop
stupa known as "Peace Pagoda" built by the
Japanese. On one of the hills in the cave of Saptparni,
the first Buddhist council was held. The cave is also
the source of the Rajgir Hot Water Springs that have
therapeutic properties and are sacrosanct to the Hindus.
