Jagannath Puri Dham, Jagannath Puri or simply Puri as
many call it, the place and the name needs no introduction.
One of the four religious centres in India, Puri entertains
millions of tourists coming to it from all over the world
every year. Lying at a distance of 60 kms from the capital
of Orissa, Bhubaneshwar the place is most famous for the
deity of Lord Jagannath, the Jagannath Temple.
Built during 12th century A.D. by the Chodaganga Deva,
the Jagannath Temple dominates the landscape for kilometers
around. Possessing a height of 65 meters, it is the
tallest temple in Orissa and one of the most splendid
pieces of architectural marvel in India. On the main
gate, 11 meters in height stands a 16-sided monolithic
pillar, called Aruna Stambha, which formally stood in
front of the Sun Temple and was brought to Puri during
the 18th century A.D. Some of the other important temples
within the precinct are Gundicha, Lokanath, Sunaragauranga,
Daria Mahabir and Tota Gopinatt.
The Temple is unique as perhaps this is the only temple
where the idols of sister and brother are worshipped.
Lord Krishna along with brother Balaram and sister Subhadra
rests in the Lord Jagannath temple to bless all those
who come to visit it. The famous 'Rathyatra' in Puri
is an added feature of the place. As the legend go,
Jagannath, lord of the universe, is carried in a impressive
convoy from this legendary temple bearing his name,
in an enormous chariot pulled by his devotees.
Maybe not as popular as the Temple, but the mesmerizing
beach of Puri is also one of the reasons that draw huge
crowds to the city all the year round from all over
the world. A wide array of luxurious hotels and lodges
along the seaside makes sure that your visit to the
hold place is exciting and fulfilling in every way.
