Situated in the ranges of Western Ghats in God's own Country,
Kerala, Periyar is most famous for its Wild Life Sanctuary.
A unique feature of this Sanctuary is a picturesque lake,
which lies right at the centre of the place. The lake
owes its conception to the Mullaperiyar Dam that was built
in 1895 and the lake has been a permanent source of water
for the wild life of the sanctuary ever since. From elephants
to tigers all one out of their habitats to either drink
water or to take a dip in the water once a day, providing
the tourists with an enthralling sight of observing the
animals in their natural habitat.
Apart from elephants, who are seen in large number
here, other attractions of the sanctuary include tigers,
Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer and
Dole or Indian Wild Dog. At present, there are about
40 tigers in the place. The bird population at the Sanctuary
comprises of Darters, Cormorants, Kingfishers, and the
great Malabar Hornbill and racket-tailed Drongoes. The
reptilian inhabitants boast of Monitor Lizards that
can be spotted lazing in the sun, on the rocks along
the lakeshore.
Sprawled over an area of 777 sq. kms is one out of
the 27 tiger Reserves in India. The place enjoys a wonderfully
equitable climate with soft breeze blowing over the
area, all the time adding more charm to its already
captivating beauty. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is also
