The second largest city of Rajasthan and a majestic jewel
in her crown, Jodhpur nestles in the lap of soft sand
dunes on the edge of the Thar Desert. It was once the
capital of the former princely state of Marwar, meaning
the 'Land of Death' probably because of the harsh climate
of the desert. Rao Jodha, the head of the Rathore clan
of Rajputs, who claimed to be descendants of Lord Rama,
founded Jodhpur in 1459 A.D.
The city offers some splendid views of its historical
heritage through architecture. The massive Mehrangarh
Fort is the evidence of the city's rich culture and
is a popular tourist destination in Jodhpur. This 5
km long structure on a 125 m high hill offers a remarkable
sight leaving its viewers awestruck. Within the fort
itself are several Palaces adding charm to the already
existing beauty of the Palace.
Surrounded by the Mehrangarh fort on its West, and
the stately sandstone Palace of Umaid Bhawan on its
East, the monuments, temples and gardens of Jodhpur,
all together depict a versatile splendor. The place
is a haven for marble palaces all dominated by an immense
wall, almost 10 kms in length having 8 gates facing
different directions.
Jaswant Thada, Umaid Bhawan, Girdikot and Sardar Market
are some of the places that one can visit while touring
Jodhpur. Even after many centuries, Jodhpur till date
continues to be a leading centre in wool, cattle, camels
and salt. For experiencing a magical vacation, book
