Nestled deep in the heart of Thar Desert lies this magical
city of Jaisalmer. The name itself conjures up the picture
of a traditional, ethnic and beautiful desert yet lively
city. Founded by Rawal Jaisal in 1156 A.D., the isolated
location of Jaisalmer kept it almost unscathed by outside
influences, even during the days of the Raj. Jaisalmer
was the last city to sign the Instrument of Agreement
with the British.
Then later in the medieval times, the isolated location
again worked in its favour as Jaisalmer fell on the
main trade route linking India to Egypt, Arabia, Persia,
Africa and the West. Even today, after centuries of
onslaught, the place stands intact, impervious to the
harsh climate, its monuments and beautiful rich culture
remaining undamaged.
One of the last princely citadel in the region, Jaisalmer
is the hub of rich merchants engaged in stone-crafting
who do their work with great delicacy on the sandstone
mansions they build, filling up facades with sculptural
filigree, screen windows, delicate marquees and attractive
balconies.
The Jaisalmer Fort that stands 100 meters over the
city is an architectural delight and attracts many people
every year to come and appreciate this marvel. The beautifully
and well places Jain Temples are another major attraction
of the place. The ancient Haveli's of Jaisalmer are
exotic building sprawled all over the city adding charm
to the already mesmerizing Jaisalmer. The Manak Chowk,
Tazia Tower and Gadsisar Sagar Tank are some of the
places worth visiting to while on Tour Packages for
