Known as Dwarasamudra is the earlier times the city of
Halebid is was once the capital of the Hoysala Empire
and flourished during the 12th and 13th centuries. It
is located at a distance of 16 kms east of Belur and 39
kms from Hassan. With the population just touching about
3000 people, Halebid is also referred as the Gem of Indian
Architecture. The glory of the place touched its zenith
during the reign of Veeraballala II, the grandson of Vishnuvardhana
and saw it's descend in 1327 when it evaded by Muhammad
Bin Tughlaq.
The temples in Halebid are a visitor's delight and
architecture's marvel. The place has one of the finest
Hoysala Temples that can be visited during Tour Packages
to Halebid. The Hoysaleshwar Temple, as it is now called,
is a scriptural extravaganza, richly endowed with most
finely detailed scrollwork in stone. Standing on a big
platform, the temple has nandi's, figure of Ganesha,
mount of Shiva, all adding to the beauty of the temple
and attracting loads of people to it. The carvings on
the walls are so artistically done that they just takes
ones breath away.
Due to certain factors this wondrous marvel came to
a decadence stage. About 30 years ago, the state government
under took the renovation work and the town as well
as the areas surrounding it gradually improved. The
climate of Halebid is pleasant throughout the year entertaining
the large number of people visiting the place. There
are buses running from Hassan, Arasikere and Belur.
There is a big tank, which feeds thousands of acres
of land wherein sugarcane and paddy are grown.
Basadi Halli Jain mandir, Kedareshwara Temple and the
Shiva Temple are also some of the places worth visiting
when in Halebid.
