Spread over an area of 5214 sq km, Gwalior is an important
and ancient city of Madhya Pradesh. The city boasts of

Gwalior is the proud city of the country because of

According to a legend in 8AD, Gwalior derives its name
from a great sage Gwalipa who cured a chief of the Kachwaha
clan, named Suraj Sen, suffering from leprosy. The chieftain
founded this city and named it after the sage.

temples, huge old forts with eye pleasing architecture
and the magnificent princely palaces, which have been
preserved with care. Among them, Gwalior Fort is most
beautiful monument of historical importance. It has
been built on a steep mass of sandstone. One of the
most invincible forts of India, the outer walls of the
forts is two miles in length and 35 feet high. The founder
of the Mughal Empire, Babar called it "the pearl
amongst the fortresses of Hind." There are statues
of Jain tirthankaras, carved out in rock, on the road
leading to the Fort.

Gujari Mahal, which is a monument to the love of Raja
Mansingh Tomar for his Gujar queen, Mrignayani. The
Man Mandir Palace, built between 1486 and 1517, by Raja
Mansingh is another marvelous piece of its time, which

famous Teli ka Mandir, towering at 100 ft high, was
constructed in the 9th century.
The temple is a Pratihara Vishnu temple of a unique
blending of architectural styles. Built in the11th century

Another landmark in the history of the city is the Gurudwara
Data Bandhi Chhod, built in the memory of Guru Hargobind
Sahib, the 6th Sikh Guru who was imprisoned here by
Jehangir for over two years. The Jai Vilas Palace, current
residence of Scindia family, combines the Tuscan and
Corinthian architectural modes, is another masterpiece
of its time reflecting the splendid past of the city.
