Lying on the edge of the southern borders of Gujarat,
in Western India, Daman and Diu is the second smallest
Union Territory of India. More popular for its exotic
beaches and intoxicating liquor, Daman and Diu offers
a perfect escape from the clamor of daily humdrum. The
twin islands date their history to the attempts of colonization
by the Portuguese in the 16th century, the evidence of
which remains in the form of rich architecture in the
place. Daman and Diu came under the control of India as
late as 1962.
The town of Diu has 3 churches, off which only one
is performing its real task i.e. the St. Paul's, while
the St. Thomas' Church now houses the Diu Museum and
St. Francis of Assisi has been converted into a hospital.
It is believed that there are only 15 Christian families
on the Island now. You can also experience the magic
of this town yourself on Tour Packages for Diu, India.
The imprints of Portuguese culture can still be felt
and seen in the town of Diu, unlike that of Daman. Narrow
winding streets and brightly painted and ornamented
houses till date characterize the streets of Diu. In
a small park on the pathway, the Marwar Memorial, topped
by a griffin, marks the liberation of the island from
the Portuguese.
The Diu Fort, built in 1541, spread over a vast expanse
of land in the extreme of the coast, commands a dominating
view and is a must see for all those who visit the beautiful
islands of Daman and Diu. Near the fort is the Panikotha
fortress, in the sea, which can be reached to by a boat.
Jallandhar and Gangeshwar Temple are other major attractions
of the place. If you also want to witness these destinations,
