in India. Known world wide as Madras, the capital of Tamil
Nadu, until recently, the city was renamed Chennai, evolved
from the age-old name, Chennapattinam.
Known for its diversities, Chennai has the second largest
beach in the world. The city has a splendid past to unfold.
In the 16th century the Portuguese and Dutch came to this
city for commerce. The Britons and French followed them.
In the year 1639, the British established their first
establishment in the village of Madraspattnam and the
famous fort of St. George was built. This part of the
region is said to be the oldest Municipality of India.
Later, British, under the leadership of Robert Clive
established their supremacy in the whole region by defeating
the French army in the series of wars known as Carnatic
wars. Finally the city became the seat of Madras Presidency,
the southern division of British Imperial India in the
19th century, owing to its importance as a major port
of India.
The city is a famous for its beaches and colonial monuments
and ancient temples. The famous Marina beach is 13 km
long. It is the second largest beach in the world. The
sands of the beach appear golden due to the reflection
of the sunlight. The soothing waters tranquilize the
body and mind as one feels the soothing breeze and rippling
waves pass you by. One of the famous landmarks of the
city is the Fort of St. George, built in 1654. The fort
