Located in the central part of the state of Bihar, in
the northeastern part of India Bodhgaya is associated
with the life of Gautam Buddha, the founder of Buddhist
religion.
A part of the great Ganges plains and one of the four
holiest cities of Buddhism, Bodhgaya is famous for Mahabodhi
temple. Situated on the west of the Falgu River, which
is a tributary of River Ganga (Ganges), the town is also
an important study center of Buddhism.
The history of the town can be traced back to the 7th
century as the region around the town formed the part
of the first small kingdom of India. The place is famous
because Gautam Buddha attained Enlightenment or Nirvana
under the Bodi Tree. In the 3rd century BC, Ashoka,
the Great built a small shrine. It is the same shrine
where today the sacred Mahabodhi temple stands.
The present Bodhi tree is tree is the descendant of
the original tree, which was obtained from Anuradhapura
in Sri Lanka, where Sanghamitra, King Ashoka's daughter
in 3rd century BC, took it. The red stone slab under
the tree is said to be the throne on which Buddha sat.
The temple has a large gilded image of Buddha.
The Archeological Museum of Bodhgaya is another important
place to visit in this small town. A number of countries,
where Buddhism is an important religion, have constructed
their temples and monasteries. Countries like Japan,
China, Burma, Korea and Sri Lanka have contributed to
restore the past glory of the temple. You also get to
