The history of the town can be traced back to the 7th century as the region around the town formed the part of the first small kingdom of India. The present Bodhi tree is tree is the descendant of the original tree, which was obtained from Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka, where Sanghamitra, King Ashoka's daughter in 3rd century BC, took it. The red stone slab under the tree is said to be the throne on which Buddha sat. The temple has a large gilded image of Buddha.

The Archeological Museum of Bodhgaya is another important place to visit in this small town.
