a visit to the temple town of Belur, 38 km. from Hassan
in the State of Karnataka will end your search. Away from
the hustle bustle of the city, Belur is famous for its
celebrated Chennakesava Temple. The Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana
built the temple in 1116 AD to commemorate the victory
of the Hoysalas over the Cholas at Talakad. It took 103
years to complete
The Channekeshava Temple is famous as it is said that
every Hindu deity has been represented in the temple.
There are all around intricate sculptures and no portion
in the temple is left blank. There are scriptures of
elephants, episodes from the epics, sensous dancers

the walls. The 38 Bracket figures on the walls are beautifully
inscribed. Everything in the temple is made with black
stones. The temple stands on a star-shaped pedestal.
The other Hoyasala temples at Belur are the Chennigaraya
and the Viranarayana.
The Viranarayana temple houses the shrines of Kappe
Chenniga, Andal, Saumya Nayaki, and other deities. With
its architectural excellence, this temple too attracts
tourists from all over the world.
