Located in the eastern part of the state of Gujarat, in
the western region of India, Baroda was the capital city
of the Gaekwad rulers. Situated on the banks of Vishvamitra
River, the present city is famous for its art galleries,
palaces, well-laid parks and museums.
The history of the town can be traced back to 812
AD. The name of the city was frequently changed. In
the earlier times it was referred to as Vadapadraka,
then Chandanavati, after a local Rajput ruler, then
to Varhavati, Vatpatraka, and Baroda. Today the city
is renamed as Vadodara.
The city has been under the patronage of many rulers.
The Hindu kings ruled the city till 1297. From 1297
to 1401 the Muslim rulers of Delhi Sultanate had their
supremacy. Later an independent Muslim kingdom was established
here, which was known as the Gujarat Sultanate. The
present city was established during this period, which
spanned from 1401 to 1573. In 1573, Akbar, the Mughal
emperor, defeated the local Muslim ruler. The Mughal
period lasted until 1734, when the Maratha period started
under the Gaekwad family. From 1734 to 1947, it became
the capital of the powerful Gaekwad rulers, however
in 1802, British established a residency in Baroda
The main tourist attraction of the city is the Sayaji
Bagh. It is a very big well-laid park
One can see the Baroda Museum and Art Gallery through

southeast of Baroda, known for its 13th-century Hindu
military architecture and Dakor, famous for its Temple
of Ranchodrai are other few places near the town worth
visiting.
