Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister termed
Bangalore as "India's city of the future". Today
Bangalore, known as India's Silicon Valley and the country's
pub capital, along with aerospace research, biotechnology
and dozens of premier education institutions, is perhaps
one of the most westernized cities in India.
Founded in 1537 by Magadi Chieftain, Kempe Gowda, Bangalore
derives its name from 'Bendakalooru' or the town of
boiled beans, a name given by Veera Ballala, a king
of the Vijayanagar dynasty, who having lost his way
in the forests was given a bowl of boiled beans by a
woman here.
Gowda's son, Kempe Gowda II, built the famous towers
at the four corners of the old city. In 1638, Bangalore
was conquered by Bijapur Sultan and ruled for next fifty
years. Later the city was annexed by the Mughals, who
ruled it for next three years. In 1687, the Mughals
sold Bangalore to King Wodeyar of Mysore for three lakhs
pagodas.
In 1759, Hyder Ali received the city from Krishna Raja
Wodeyar II. He made Bangalore an army town. His son,
Tipu Sultan, a brave warrior, who fought with British,
ruled the city, till he died in the 4th Mysore war.
Later the city came under the British rule.
The famous Bull temple or Basavanagudi, which has been
carved out of a single granite block, was constructed
in this city of garden in 16th century AD. Tipu Sultan's
Palace, which was built of teakwood and famous for the
floral designs on the walls and ceilings and the beautiful
Lalbagh, spread over 240 acres are the main tourist
attractions in the city that you get to see through
the tour packages for Bangalore.
The Vidhana Saudha, famous for its architectural style,
the Cubbon Park laid by Lord Cubbon, the Sri Gavi Gangadhareshwar
temple, the Ulsoor Lake, known for its picturesque tiny
islands, are other beautiful sites in the city, included
in the tour packages for Bangalore.
Apart from these the Government Museum, established
in 1886, which has a beautiful collection of archaeological
artifacts and the art gallery that has a collection
of the works of the noted artist of the court of Mysore
K. Venkatappa, are worth visiting.
